...and have any of you tried it? I understand the basics of it, but I don't know exactly how it works.

    Tony,

I've not done this but have been skydivng for awhile. It's my understanding that base jumping is simply skydiving off of a sationary object.. Bridge, bldg, cliff etc.

      Bridge - Antennae - Span - Earth
Basically it's jumping off any stationary object.
The gear is similar to skydiving rigs but the canopies (parachutes) are bigger and most only have a main canopy and no reserve.
The containers (the backpack that holds the canopy) fasten differently as there's the obvious need for them to open quickly.
Skydiving rigs have been jumped from higher launch points but it's much less common.
"The right tool for the job" couldn't be more apropos!
Here's some links to BASE web sites and more info.

BASE actually stands for Building - Antenna - Span - Earth.

If any of you skydivers out there plan on getting into BASE, then consider going to Bridge Day in West Virginia first. It's a great way for getting into BASE offering first time jumpers a relatively safe and controlled BASE environment.
